Florida Artist Joanelle Mulrain - First Coast Art Spot - Nov. 26, 2007
Joanelle Mulrain grew up on the St. Johns River in Jacksonville. She studied under painter Memphis Wood; potters Charlie Brown, Toshika Takaezu, Marilyn Taylor, and Kaye Kaufman; and watercolor artist Mun Quan. Following a penchant for archaeology and ancient history, she spent a summer traveling throughout Mexico studying the Mayan culture. Her professional career has spanned non-profit and retail positions to more than 20 years in healthcare marketing communications, the federal government, consulting business and, now, Great Blue Heron Studios.
She recently lived three years in Washington, DC, where her love of art and nature’s seasons flourished. While living in Georgetown she helped a friend open a 12k-square-foot art gallery on M Street. After she and her younger son moved back to Jacksonville, at dusk one evening she visited civil rights/environmental activist and author Stetson Kennedy at his homestead on Lake Beluthahatchee. There she snapped a digital photo of “Big Blue,” a wild great blue heron sitting on a cypress tree limb surrounded below by a million cattails. These dual images – the heron and cattails – inspired her and, subsequently, became her logo and signature images for her virtual gallery. Frequently, she paddles her blue kayak deep into the St. Johns’ swamps and tributaries to snap the tall, fluid and elegant cattail. These peaceful vistas are embellished with a broad palette of color offering a whimsical presentation of bold brushstrokes. A radiance of color bursts forth in a spiritual, calming manner. Her commune with nature is evident as she asks the viewer to participate with her in a journey through nature as she shares her deep understanding of the importance of sustaining our ecosystems and protecting and preserving our natural environment for generations to come.
Always looking for adventure, she and her oldest son crewed the HMS Bounty tall ship from Jacksonville to South Street Seaport, New York; they summited Tanzania’s Mount Kilimanjaro (19,340’); and in October 2007, she brought her son to Kathmandu, Nepal, to trek to Mount Everest Base Camp, and she continued on by herself to Bhutan and Thailand to take pictures and learn about the culture. Also in 2007, Joanelle opened Laura Street Gallery, a five-month sublease, in the historic Elks Building in Downtown Jacksonville, as an ARTstop on the monthly ARTwalk. Her “Florida Cattails at Lochloosa” was featured on the front cover (March 2007) of the Florida Bar Journal. A giclee (1/5) of the original was installed at The Florida Senate in Tallahassee, Florida (May 2007) and featured on the front cover of the Florida Lake Management Society’s annual convention brochure (June 2007). Another full-size giclee (2/5) as well as a large 9’x6’ triptych painting of the St. Johns River are presently “on loan” to U.S. Senator Bill Nelson at the Hart Senate Office Building in Washington, DC. The first edition of her first book, “Re-Rooting: Life’s Journey,” is now in its second printing.
She’s currently working on a documentary and companion book entitled, “Legacy of the Deed: The Story of Willie Browne and The Theodore Roosevelt Area of the Timucuan Ecological and Historic Preserve, National Park Service, U.S. Department of the Interior.” In September 2007, a loblolly bay tree was named a co-U.S. Champion in the Preserve, now a focal point of the project. In October 2007, her painting, “The John B. Stetson Mansion Alligator Grotto,” was unveiled at the re-opening of the 1886 mansion in DeLand as a fundraiser for The Museum of Florida Art (October – December showcase); and she was chosen as a Featured Artist for the 2008 Women’s Board (Wolfson Children’s Hospital) “Art & Antiques Show” in December.
ARTIST’S STATEMENT
Through a myriad of experiences and travels that have broadened my mind and pleased my soul, I am now back to my roots. I have always wanted to go back to painting and photography, and write a book. So, this trilogy of work has begun. Through my painting, I express the beautiful cattails in their wild and willowy manner in the swamps and tributaries of the St. Johns River. Cattails serve as sentinels for our environment. My range of color is exciting to work with and my tools are decades old, recently found and now reused. Through my photography I capture in a very simple way what I see with my eye and now am able to share with others. Through my words in my book I am able to touch those in the midst of change and support their move forward. I have found my place for a while and am blessed to be able to share my passion.

Halloween's over, so it must be time to deck the halls
Congratulations to all the merchants who held off putting up Christmas decorations until five minutes after Halloween trick-or-treaters went inside to gobble their candy. Those wreaths, trees and parking lot decorations signal the start of the holiday shopping season - motto: "Veni, vidi, Visa (We came, we saw, we went shopping.)
